There is a wide variety of Aloes in South Africa and around the world. They form part of the Lily family! They vary from a few centimeters to meters tall! Stems range from long to none and they flower in brilliant reds and oranges. They grow naturally and are not susceptible to attack by parasites or plant eating insects (probably too thorny!) This makes the use of pesticides unnecessary. They are extremely hardy and can even survive up to two years out of the soil and still blossom at the right time!
USED HISTORICALLY
The Aloe plant has been used throughout history by many different cultures for a variety of purposes. For over 2000 years, historians and scientists have described the almost magical qualities of the Aloe. It was referred to as the ‘Medicine or Miracle plant’. Medical books from the sixth century record the use of Aloes. The aloe was used in Biblical times, (John 19:39, Numbers 24:6 and Proverbs 7.17). It was one of the ingredients used for embalming the body of Christ.

Used to treat ringworm, internal worms, wounds, gum boils and infected or aching teeth! Bushmen paintings depict the Aloe in their Cave Rock paintings.
FOR VETERINARY PURPOSES
It has been used for treating enteritis in calves and fowls, bird breeders testify to the benefits and it is also used as a natural antibiotic for sheep. A number of farmers in the Karoo (S.A) are using this natural remedy which certainly makes it much healthier for meat consumers! POPULARITY HAS GROWN ENORMOUSLY
Although the word ‘Aloe” has become very fashionable over the past years, we still feel proud that we were the pioneers in South Africa in using aloe in our Cosmetics and Health Ranges. It is now also being incorporated in many other products as well as food stuffs (e.g. yoghurt and jam) and in personal hygiene products (e.g. toothpaste and even toilet paper! We have recently seen toilet paper with Aloe and Vitamin E!) The curative and nutritional wealth of the aloe is phenomenal and many cases have been documented worldwide! SPECIES MOST COMMONLY USED
The Aloe Vera and Aloe Ferox are the most widely used for cosmetic and health products. The Amino Acid content of the Aloe Ferox is the highest and this has been confirmed by an independent authority. Most Aloes grow in the Karoo and in the Albertina district in the Western Cape. The Aloe factory in Albertina can be visited and the traditional method of extracting the sap can be viewed. The inside of the Aloe the ‘fillet’ (where most of the goodness lies) is dried and concentrated 200 times into a powder form. It takes one ton of Aloe to make only three kilograms of gel!
